Nortun Lodge is invited to join the Two Harbors Sons of Norway Terje Viken Lodge on a field trip to the North Shore Commercial Fishing in Tofte, Minnesota. The museum is dedicated to the history of the Scandinavian immigrants and communities of the North Shore region of Lake Superior, and especially their importance to the national commercial fishing industry of the 1880s to 1940s. It is Minnesota’s first museum dedicated to commercial fishing.
On the night of the Christmas City of the North parade, we ventured down to the Nordic Center for its celebration of Pepperkakebyen (roughly Gingerbread Town).
We celebrate Syttende Mai (May 17th) – Norwegian Independence Day, Leif Erikson’s birthday on October 9th and, of course, Juletime in December with our Juletrefest Christmas Scandinavian Potluck. We also celebrated a birthday, Sons of Norway member Lil Haldorsen’s 106th birthday.
In September the Duluth Lodge chartered a bus to the popular Norsk Høstfest in Minot, ND for a large contingent of members to attend what has become the nation’s largest Scandinavian festival, attracting tens of thousands of attendees and talent from all over the world. September 27-30, 2023.
Many of our members attended the Rosemaling Society’s 42nd annual Scandinavian Festival in Proctor in September. The Sons of Norway was there with some examples of antique rosemaling pieces, showing how this uniquely Norwegian tradition has been continued and redefined by artists today.
